Herb Garden, Step 1
The project design is still rolling around in my head, though it is coming into focus, but the days are passing and the weather has been beautiful and it is time to starting putting some ACTION to the PLAN.
Was on the web last week looking some more at herb garden designs and came across this one that really fits what I already have and where I planned to put the herb garden. I was thrilled! See the design here.
It can be laid out in a rectangle or circle and since I have a circular bed already, that is the way I will apply it.
There is already a nice bird bath in the area and this also fits perfectly with the design.
There is a rose bush which isn’t in the design, but will let it stay for now. It doesn’t get too big and it is in an offcenter location that won’t interfere with the overall layout.
So yesterday I started in. Dug out some hostas that were there and transplanted them to fill in space around a tree we have in the front yard, sprucing that up. Dug out some day lilies that were also along the periphery and transplanted to make a border below what will be my fruit garden.
Then I got out the Mantis tiller and in a few short minutes had the whole area, about 12 feet diameter, tilled up to several inches. Came back and smoothed it over, ready for planting.
Here’s what it looks like at the end of Step 1:
Feels great to get this project started and to get the hands in the dirt!
See you in the garden!

Congratulations on a great start. Make sure to keep in mind being able to reach your garden without trampling on it.

Maybelline,
Thanks for that.
Step 2 is to put a trail in a cross pattern through the center, cutting the circle into four quadrants. That should put every point within a 3′ radius from either the outside perimeter or the central paths.
