Pursuing health, growing a business, being spirit all blend together in a wholistic approach to becoming truly you.

Been listening to the Abundant Mystic Telesummit, enjoying the faculty talk about combining spirit/intuition/heart with business. Actually, they are making the point that spirit and business are just parts of the same, not even on different sides of the coin. They also pointed out that business is a great way to grow as a person.

Business, personal growth, spiritual connection/practice are all part of being a growing, maturing person.

So in that context of “wholeness” as I was thinking about the steps to getting healthy and posting them on the Facebook page, it struck me that the steps to getting healthy are the same steps to setting up and running a business.

Decide. Plan. Get a coach(es). Take action. Invest. Receive. Practice. Be consistent. See results (ROI). Give back.

It’s all there.

So getting healthy, business, personal development, spiritual connection/practice are all part of growing and maturing as a person and all intertwined with each other.

I had never put health and business together in a practical way like that before, nor had I ever looked at health and business with such a positive slant. I have hated the “business” of health since it has done so much to divorce health from care.

But here it is, caring, healing, being spirit-connected business, growing, developing, maturing all working together, becoming.

That’s what I’m talking about. What do YOU think?

Blessings,

Dr Jon

The Law of Attraction should be called the Law of Resonance. More in line with taking action and with the Universal principle of frequency and vibration.

A very interesting website, the Abundant Mystic, is holding a Telesummit over the next few weeks. These are daily interviews by Edward Mills, the site owner, with folk active in and having success with the concept of “mystic business” or, as I prefer, living from the heart and, particularly, doing business from the heart.

The first one played yesterday, May 10. It featured Bob Doyle, a Law of Attraction guy who teaches the concept and apparently does a lot of personal development type stuff.

Great interview!

Mr. Doyle really pegged the whole concept of the Law of Attraction, and I personally was getting a lot of tidbits and “ah-has” from it.

Here’s one big one: The Law of Attraction is poorly named.

It should be called The Law of Resonance.

“Attraction” gives the connotation that you sit and “attract”. Like honey to bees; just be sweet, do nothing and in they come.

Apparently this concept has taken hold and very few are doing anything or seeing any results.

“Resonance” on the other hand implies that one must actually take action and “tune in” to the resonant frequency of whatever they are attracting. There’s some movement required. Now, it doesn’t have to be hard and grunting and sweating and all that. The “dial” just has to be moved to get to the “right station.”

The idea of Resonance is also more in line with the fact that the universe is energy that is constantly everywhere and in everything vibrating and hence made up of frequency. The concept is much more “scientific” in that it makes sense to the Western mind. We talked about this one day on our Renegade Heart Radio Show on Talkshoe.

And that really is what it is all about. Getting in tune. With yourself, your passion (as Mr. Doyle says), your purpose, Father.

Once the movement to alignment has occurred (not always so easy and certainly not always without effort – as Mr. Doyle points out there is often a lot of resistance) then the energy can flow in the form of most anything. Joy, pleasure, satisfaction, money, accomplishment, “success” in whatever way you define it.

This interview is certainly worth a listen. Unfortunately, if you didn’t get it yesterday you will have to pay Edward for a copy. In the meantime, sign up for the rest of the cast; if they are even close to Mr. Doyle it will be worth your time.

And, BTW, there are no affiliate links or remunerations for me to tell you about this series, just letting you know about some good stuff.

You see, that is my passion. I am putting what I heard last night into action. My passion is teaching people to think bigger and better, to take what they “know” and really get a handle on it to make sense in the big picture. My passion is also to encourage people to get real with themselves, to get “naked”, figuratively and literally, to shed all the posturing and posing and covering up we do so we don’t have to really see our lacks and needs and dis-eases. The Garden of Eden is the goal, attainable once again if we only believe.

I’m turning the dial to resonate with that which is me, shedding all my own stuff standing in the way and standing back to see the Law of Resonance work.

See you in the Garden!

Blessings,

Dr Jon

P.S. Another passion is actually doing the garden thing. I’ll see you in that garden at one of my other blogs, the Urban Farmer.

Business Building Webinar with encouraging video

I just spent an hour with a group of people whom I have come to appreciate though have never spoken to any of them face to face or never shaken their hand. We are all members of the Focus Society Mastermind and attend the weekly Webinar series hosted by the Focus Society that is teaching us how to Build Our Business From Scratch.

There are two reasons why I am blogging about this:

First, for any who want to build a business or have a business that they are trying to improve, this is a group of people you need to meet and a place you need to go on a regular basis. I could say a lot more and give you the big sales pitch but I won’t. If business building rings your bell, go and see what this group offers and find out for yourself why you need to be part. Here is a link when you are ready:

Business Building Webinar Series

Second, and more importantly, tonight one of the presenters, Brad Parler, showed a video that captured the spirit of what this group is all about and which captures the heart of many of us who really want to see things in the world change. Whether change looks like people making more cash, becoming healthier, more satisfied, helping others grow and learn, or just becoming who they are supposed to be, this video is an encouragement and a reminder. That he could take it off YouTube and play it over a webinar was also pretty cool.

Here’s the video. Enjoy. Be encouraged. Live your dream!

Entrepreneurs Can Change the World

Blessings,

Dr Jon

Resources to improve your life and businessk.

Maybe it is because Christmas is coming or maybe it’s an attraction thing, but in the last couple of days my email inbox has had links to several really excellent resources.

The first was a link to a book named

Instant Wealth – Wake up Rich by Christopher Howard.

This is a “mindset” book which will help change the negative thinking that keeps so many of us back. The title is the link to Christopher’s sales movie. Though I haven’t read the book yet – just got the link myself – it is highly recommended by successful financial people. Typical of internet marketing techniques it also comes with some nice bonuses.

The next resource was a new offering from the marketing Guru/Special One/Innovator, Mark Joyner.

Simpleology 201

is his latest in a growing line of teaching and products that are designed to help each of us organize, gain and achieve our potential. Actually this isn’t quite ready but Mark is letting you get a little taste ahead of time. Although you don’t need to have studied his previous work (Simpleology 101, 102, and 103) it would be well worthwhile for you to do so. It is so worthwhile that just studying and practicing the “100″ series will take you far down the road to your personal growth and success whether you go further with the “200″ series or not. Again, the title is the link to Mark’s new product.

By the way, if you are new to Simpleology, the basic Core Training, Simpleology 101 is free!

Another quality resource that was in my email inbox today was the link from Jay Abraham and Rich Shefren to their series currently going on called the

League of Extraordinary Minds.

Click the title to see the list of world class business mentors who are being interviewed, having their brains picked to help you build your business. The calls are a couple of hours each, full of really helpful content and FREE! This week was the 5th in the series. Although the previous ones are not posted for more than a couple of days, the entire set can be purchased with transcripts for a very nominal fee. This kind of information is really priceless.

Finally, another group that has been really helpful for me and features people who have become my “internet friends,”

Focus Society MasterMind

This is a group of real people like you and me, working out the nuts and bolts of our businesses on a daily basis. There is a wealth of material and helpful advice posted in a forum along with videos and discussion of books and experiences. Now, most recently, there is a new video series just starting on how to set up, start, and run your business. This is available for a very nominal fee and has lots of built-in help and personal attention – worth more than any advice in my opinion!

Click the link to get started. The next webinar is this Saturday.

As the Old Year winds down and you are thinking about giving gifts to others, give yourself the gift of an investment in yourself, either of time or money or both, to improve your brain and your focus and your heart.

Blessings,

Dr Jon

Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, and other personal improvement “gurus” use the term “chief main purpose.” Whatever you call it, the concept is that there is something that, above all else, drives and motivates you to function, to live. For many, if not most, this seems to become buried very quickly upon entering the planet and we lose sight of that purpose and fall into the “life of quiet desperation” as Thoreau so aptly put it.

The quest I have been on to discover my own deepest desire I think is finally over. The journey to work it out is just beginning.

I personally began thinking that I would be a teacher and that expanded into aiming toward becoming a professor and researcher in the area of quantum chemistry/physics. That truly made me hum.

But in the process the road took a hard right turn when I bounced off the “guardrail” of a motor vehicle accident and I found myself in medical school instead. Instead of teaching a few interested, or not, students about the wonders of the atomic world, my heart expanded to teach many more people, in their times of hurt and pain, to find comfort for body and soul.

This also took a sharp veer off in the direction of alternative medicine – nutrition and other nondrug therapies. At this juncture I added the label of “heretic” or “renegade” though I have fought this label for many years. Only recently have I discovered and accepted that such a title more adequately describes and reflects my deeper heart.

In the interim I have attempted to help people, and myself, in other ways. I have passed out medical information, encouraged folks to start a business and do some marketing to try to improve themselves, talked about organic food, did lawn care and landscaping while emphasizing natural fertilizers, and offered my hands and heart by way of massage and bodywork. All of this was done in an attempt not only to help people, but to quiet that deeper longing, that still small voice way down inside that was pointing me to my deepest self and purpose. Incidentally, none of the other things which I have tried could be considered overly successful – though I am a GREAT bodyworker.

As I have followed this unrelenting voice I was led further down the renegade trail, into the world of getting naked, literally and figuratively, and experiencing a growing understanding of how powerful this is to bring healing. In spite of our culture’s aversion to it, the stories and experiences of large and growing numbers of people are documenting the value and healing power it brings. This is, of course, no surprise since Father created us in this way and only our failure to follow him changed our perspective.

And it is this which has finally brought me to the realization of my deep heart:

More than teaching, exploring the secrets of creation, helping people, alleviating pain, solving problems, or taking people into places of deeper healing, I desire first and foremost to live as if I were once again in the Garden of Eden.

My desire is to nakedly and unashamedly walk and talk with my Creator Father that loves me, and you, more than I can possibly imagine, more than my heart could possibly contain, to spend every moment with his voice in my ear, knowing that he is pleased that I care so much for him and desire to relate to him. I am not talking religion – that is all lies and illusion. No, I am talking the reality of Life in a way that affects what I do every moment, what my “job” looks like, what my relationships look like, what my bank account looks like, what my activities look like.

Impossible, you say? I don’t think so. Uncommon, yes, for we get so deceived by religion, and caught up in living and making a living, but NOT impossible. In fact, as I realized all this about my true and deepest self, it came crashing in on my consciousness that the Lord’s Prayer, so called, is precisely a call and an expression of desire to return to the Edenic relationship. I have no doubt that when Jesus/Yeshua taught us to say this prayer, he had the picture of Eden in his mind and heart. His purpose in coming to the planet was to restore what had been lost, and it is exactly this Edenic existence which was lost.

“Our Father” – not a label but a deeply emotional recognition, spoken with deepest love and respect and honor, of a person who loves me infinitely.

“Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is done in heaven” – a call for me to live in that place that was first experienced in Eden when Father’s will was followed and he was free to come and talk and share his heart.

“Forgive me as I forgive” – the way back to this place of openness and freedom.

“Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one” – the choice NOT to eat of the tree of knowledge, the choice to tell the serpent when he comes to deceive and bring doubt and make us think we have to control our own destiny that we will instead follow the loving and true heart of Father no matter how it looks for we KNOW that his love is uncompromising and complete and fulfilling and more than enough.

So this is my naked heart and soul, my deepest desire and deepest and truest self. What is yours?

This has and will no doubt continue to take me further down the renegade trail and what that looks like I have no idea, but it will be a trail into Love, of that I am certain.

Blessings,

Dr Jon

Treat your dis-ease at whichever level is good for you, but get the best results with going deep.

In our last post we outlined three levels of life and the fact that the physical level is “merely” an expression of the deeper emotional and spirit levels. Now let’s examine what that has to do with dis-ease and healing.

I believe we have the choice to live primarily at either of the three levels though the other levels will always have some influence at the same time. Most of the time most of us live at the physical level primarily. We spend our days earning a living, caring for our bodies, breathing, feeling our heart beat, handling physical objects, driving the car to get places. When we experience a dis-ease we look for help from the doctor or some type of practitioner. Many of us are totally committed to the world we call medicine with its drugs, surgery and radiation as its primary tools for solving our physical problems. Some, and more all the time, are seeking once again for more natural means that include vitamins, food choices, herbs and similar less toxic approaches. There is also the world of massage and bodywork therapy which offers the very physically focused techniques of Swedish massage and Deep Tissue massage where your body can feel touch and pressure and stretching to bring relief for many dis-eases. Like Newtonian physics, these approaches can work all the time though they may be shortsighted and missing the deeper magic.

However, the question I had as a physician and still have as a massage therapist is, “Can this level of therapy really adequately solve the question of dis-ease when it is expressed physically? Can we solve the physical problem by simply approaching it from the physical standpoint?” And part of that question has to do with the role of the practitioner. What does the therapist really do? Are they really needed?

At the physical level the answer to those questions is that the practitioner is almost always needed to perform the physical tasks required to bring some modicum of healing. Someone has to stitch up the cuts since you usually can’t do it yourself. Someone has to spend the time to learn enough about what drug or herb or vitamin you need to help stimulate the physical healing process since you probably won’t have spent the time to do it yourself. Someone needs to be able to step back and evaluate you objectively to help decide what is best for you.

Continuing on with our discussion, we also have the choice to live primarily at the emotional level and similarly we can approach dis-ease from a primarily emotional level. As a practitioner/therapist I quickly discovered the value, power and effectiveness of doing so. Asking dis-eased persons to look into their emotional issues begins to uncover hidden or even obvious underlying causes of what is expressed as dis-ease. There are techniques that specifically do this. In the medical world they include psychotherapy, psychology, and counseling of various types. In the alternative there are techniques such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or Bach Flower Remedies and perhaps some parts of Reiki or similar therapies. This would include the work of Louise Hay, the Desire discussed by Napoleon Hill or Norman Vincent Peale’s Power of Positive Thinking. The bodywork world can easily access emotions by virtue of touching and holding spots on the body where these emotions become “stuck” in tissue and in memory. Though these techniques may have varying degrees of effectiveness, the point here is that the approach is primarily directed toward the emotional level.

At this level the answer to the question about what role the practitioner plays is that someone is usually and likely required to assist you in going to levels of your existence that you likely will not or would not go or desire to go if you were left on your own. The practitioner/therapist offers insight and an energy that helps push you past your comfort zone and allows you to release old hurts, pains and disappointments which in turn brings a measure of healing into your dis-ease.

Finally, we have the choice to live primarily in spirit, to live from a sense of “knowing” who we are and what to do, on a daily basis. Few of us can see or believe beyond the physical to get and stay here. This is the deep place, the “deep magic” where the real core of our being and the root of our existence actually is. This is the deep subconscious that forms our personalities and controls our responses to the people, events and circumstances of our life. This is the place where we are most scared and hesitant to go and change, yet this is exactly where we need to go to make significant and lasting change. Dis-ease here is what keeps us from becoming our true selves, is what keeps us poor and OK with being poor, is what keeps us locked into our fears and unable to get past them. We may dream and wish for better but that is emotional and until we get to this deep level, nothing truly changes.

When applied to dis-ease, this is the root of all of our problem and lack of true health, yet so far we have discovered or used little or no means of approach and access. The medical world has absolutely nothing to address this level and doesn’t even believe in it, though a few physicians are beginning to talk about “prayer”. In the natural and bodywork world a couple of energy techniques such as Cranio-Sacral therapy and Reconnective Therapy are probably working at this level.

Mostly, however, I believe the real “technique” at this level is the simple presence of a practitioner tuned in to the whole concept of spirit. First and foremost remember that our being and our body wants and has the ability to heal itself as we evidence when we suffer a cut, for example. The only reason it does not, I believe, is because we put up a block to that healing at the deepest level. For some reason, our fear or misperception about things makes us believe that the dis-ease is better for us than the healing of it. That thought has to be changed at the deep level of spirit. The aware practitioner can come and simply give permission for the dis-eased to let go of the fear and allow the self-healing to occur. Consequently, all that is required of the practitioner is the permission of presence. No special technique or movement or touching is necessary (though that is always good!). The issue then becomes, will you let your self go to that deep place, let go your fear, your control, your comfort zone, and allow the healing to occur, to change you and thus your thoughts and behaviors and body? You may have to give up the job or lifestyle and go do and be what you are meant to do and be. Worse, and perhaps too frightening, you may have to give up your taught and practiced belief in who you are and become your true self.

So the question remains, how much healing do you want?

Do you want to limit treatment to the physical body and thus help the physical be better?

Are you ready to look at emotional causes of your dis-ease, to look at and admit and deal with what in your past and in your fear and in your emotions has deeply hurt and scarred and now expressed as physical symptoms?

Or are you willing to really go deep into your spirit core, really get vulnerable and naked with yourself and your therapist and allow your spirit to bring the deep healing, make the basic changes, do the “reprogramming” that will affect your entire existence and at the same time change the dis-ease symptoms?

It’s up to you. You are worth the tough stuff, the deep work, the making of the champion. You are an expression of Loving Father’s mind! Go for the Gold! Get Naked with yourself. Go Deep. Be truly well.

Blessings,

Dr Jon

Three levels, at least, of existence with analogy to levels of physics.

The physical world in which you move, the physical body in which you live, is “merely” an expression of a much deeper, grander, more powerful spiritual reality. The physical planet on which we breathe is “meremly” the expression of the thought of God, Loving Father, who from his mind spoke into existence the amazing, perfectly coherent existence in which we share. Now I suggest that you can “dissect” this expression of life into at least three levels. Excuse me for doing so, but this is the Western way of trying to understand things. Hopefully at the end it will all fit back together. The first level is the obvious physical level. This is the level at which we breathe, see with our physical eyes, hear with our physical ears, move our physical body, make a living, earn money, experience cuts and scrapes and cancers and diabetes and arthritis and so forth. This is the bottom of the scale, the lowest vibration in the energy field. This is where our daily life takes shape and all the cause and effect kinds of relationships “work” here. The knife produces the cut; the motor vehicle out of control causes the fractured leg. To compare it to the field of physics, this is where Newtonian physics takes place. Everything is observable, testable, documentable, “scientific”. It is easy and commom to put our trust in this level.

The second level is the less obvious but well known and somewhat understood emotional level. This is where we feel, experience joy and sadness, elation and grief, laughter and depression. This is where we are attracted to the job we like, the person we marry. This is where we gain the energy to be loyal to a cause or person, to give ourselves over to protect our children, our family. This is where we decide to spend the extra time in the pool to become the Olympic champion or take the extra batting practice or study for the extra degree to be more qualified as an accountant or physician. The causes of the emotion are not so obvious, nor are the effects so predictable. Where does the grief come from? Was it from the death of your mother or the fight on the playground years ago? Are you laughing at a joke that truly is funny or because that is your reaction to tragedy? Why do you love your Harley but all of your siblings think that motorcycles are for fat guys with long hair and too many tatoos (and you are not fat, don’t have long hair or any tattoos)? Yet every physical manifestation has a root at this level. In our analogy this level is like the energy and activity of the atom that cannot be explained by Newtonian physics but depends on something more strange and less understandable like quantum physics. At the same time it does not in any way make Newtonian physics wrong, just insufficient. How can energy be both wave and particle at the same time? How can energy have intelligence and know what it is going to do before it does it? How can matter be composed mostly of non-matter? Yet without this energy there is no physical existence. Yet we do not easily trust this level. Anything emotional is suspect and considered unreal and without merit.

The third level is even more obscure and even less understood. This is the level of spirit. This is where we experience the sense of “knowingness” where we just know. It may not make any logical sense whatsoever, it has little if anything to do with emotion though it will likely stimulate significant and deep emotion. This is where Love and Fear reside. This is where Loving Father exists and where he invites us to live with him. This is where Jesus, Yeshua, also lived and what he manifested while on this planet. He constantly was directing us to move into and live at this level. He would do nothing (physical) unless he first saw his Father doing it (spirit). He told us that we need to eat his flesh and drink his blood – wild, crazy, not understandable – to get to this level. This is a transcendence beyond physical into spirit. At this level he could walk on water, raise the dead, bring life to dying body parts (heal the sick) and control the weather. At this level he could love without restraint the unlovely and he could die with the confidence that he would not stay dead. In our analogy, this is like the subatomic level where it seems that all the simple rules of physics are superceded and there is a “deep magic”, as C.S. Lewis would call it, in control. At this level all bets are off. This is wild, nearly unrestrained, mostly unpredictable. This is where energy is nearly limitless, where the amount of energy contained in the space as small as a mustard seed is enough to move mountains. Nonetheless, this level is completely untrusted. Though religions abound, they do so to try to bring this level into some understandable framework so that we can trust it. Taken in its pure essence, however, this level is rarely followed without restraint.

With these levels of existence in mind and some of the implications, let’s consider in the next post what all of this has to do with healing.

Dr Jon

P.S. Are there more than three levels?? Could be. Let’s be open to the possibility. OR, are there really three levels? Probably not, since we are whole, unified beings and a mix at the same time of all these. Yet it may me helpful to look at them, especially when we discuss healing.

Not receiving, not believing, not going to the deep emotions that control us are the reasons why we don't get healed.

It has been my passion in life, though only recently recognized and articulated by me, to see people (and myself!) find real and deep healing for not only their physical, but also their emotional/spiritual dis-eases. Yet I personally struggle with, and most if not all of my friends and clients struggle with, the seeming reality that we are not healed of our dis-eases.

Why not?

There seems to me to be a couple of reasons.

First, let’s talk about how life “works.” We are spirits living in a physical body, here to learn how to manifest what is truly real in the spirit world into this physical world. As spirit we have all that we need and are complete, not dis-eased, living abundantly and powerfully. (Though as a Jesus Follower I believe we lack one thing – the Life of and Personal Communion with God/Father. That also is obtainable and the REAL purpose behind all the rest.) As Dr. Robert Anthony points out, though, there is a “lag,” fortunately, between the thought in spirit and its manifestation in physical. If you could say “I have $100″ and $100 showed up to help you, you could also say “The boogie man is after me” and the boogie man would show up to hurt you. So there are two “minds” at work to effect this lag. Ideas, thoughts, wishes all happen in the BRAIN. Emotion, feeling all happens in the HEART. Ideas and thoughts have to get out of the brain and into the heart and emotion before any ACTUAL manifestation into the physical world can occur

Applying these concepts to healing, we must realize first and foremost that we are sick because we FEEL that we are. For some reason (feeling unloved and needing to control things ourselves) we allow fear into our emotion and after the lag time it manifests as illness.

So why don’t we find healing? I think one reason is because we do not go into the deep emotional places in our hearts to discover what emotions are causing the dis-ease. Instead, we use our heads and our thinking (research, technology, diagnoses) to attempt to bring some change at the physical level. We can do that to a point, but eventually the dis-ease returns because we don’t change the emotion. The actual “healing” is the energy to change the emotion and only needs to be received and allowed to work. But the receiving is actually very simple. Like a radio receiver, we need only let the information come in and do what it does. Instead, we want to change it, control it, make it look like something else we would rather have. Or we are scared that changing our emotion at such a core level will change our life in a way that will be uncomfortable to us. Healing being uncomfortable – that is an interesting thought! But it happens all the time.

Another reason we don’t receive healing, I think, is because we truly don’t believe it can happen. Like Peter walking on water, although he did it, his brain took over and he stopped believing – and he stopped water-walking as well. We are the same. Suppose I had a herniated disc, for example, and received healing to the point that the back and leg pain was gone and I was as good as a teenager. Guaranteed on waking the next morning I would think – “I’m supposed to be in pain” and boom! the pain would be back.

Something about this existence here on the planet makes us want to live in our heads and not our hearts. Let’s get back into our hearts. Let’s receive and believe our healing.

Blessings,

Dr Jon

Vocational types adapted to the modern industrial society.

Last time we discussed the four archetypical mindsets having to do with vocations.

What does that have to do with today and how you/I do business??

Here are my thoughts.

First, a review. The four Vocational types suggested are

Hunter/Gatherer
Farmer/Rancher
Craftsman/Serviceman
Shopkeeper/Banker

In today’s world I don’t think there are many true Hunter/Gatherers. The lifestyle is just too free, too unstructured, too disconnected. There may be some who would like to be that way and deep down are no doubt made that way, but finding that niche in an industrial, modern, internet-connected, “socially mediated” world is pretty tough. I think the pure scientist who can remove himself from the politics of academia and just do science for the thrill of learning and exploring new territory would come close to this mindset. In my lifetime I have met and had the privilege of working with just one such person and he exhibited many if not most of the characteristics outlined in this type.

I suspect that there are a lot more Farmer/Ranchers than we can see listed in directories or driving down country roads. The industrial world has turned farming and ranching into huge agribusiness conglomerates, but the desire to own, operate, live on and be part of the small family farm is a force that resides in the breast of a large number of people. The “life beyond the sidewalks”, the call to have the backyard garden or the 40 acre spread, to raise the goats and milk the family cow is a spewing volcano waiting to explode across this country. The success of magazines like Countryside and Small Farm Today, Acres USA and others attest to this. The monumental growth of operations like Polyface Farms in Swoope, VA with the numbers of visitors they receive and the amount of information that is gobbled up from them, to say nothing of the farm products sold, also attests to the demand that reflects this mindset in the minds of a huge number of us. Likewise, the growth of the organic farming movement and the success of stores like Whole Foods that provides primarily organically grown produce and products offer evidence that there is a bit of the farmer in each of us. Though the day job may be the mainstay for now, the day is dreamed of and worked toward when the true Farmer/Rancher can come forth in full glory!

The Craftsman/Serviceman is still alive and well in our industrial society. Some of them wear a “blue collar” and you see them everyday on your way to work. The family plumber, carpenter, concrete layer, electrician, etc. Some of these folk work for a larger company and run the backhoes and bulldozers, bobcats and skidsteers. Nonetheless, they are true craftsmen, plying their trade and proud, as they should be, of their skill. In a more modern sense we see them also working on factory lines placing their part onto the frame of what will become the minivan or truck that you drive to work. Or they operate the brake press making the ductwork that helpls to heat and cool your home. Much of what the rest of us call, perhaps derogatorily, “laborer” is actually a craft worthy of honor and demanding of unique and dedicated skill. Some of them wear a “white collar” and we call them doctors, lawyers, bookkeepers, and salesmen. The dedicated ones who pour their heart and soul into caring for their clients are indeed true craftsmen, for whom we can be thankful.

The Shopkeeper/Banker is all too prevalent in today’s industrial society. Since many don’t want to do the “dirty work”, setting up shop or going into some kind of financial business is a way out, and tends to offer lots of monetary rewards. Again, the ones who are truly, at heart, shopkeepers do an excellent job at being creative in advertising and marketing and at meeting the needs of their clients, providing real service.

Obviously I have outlined the “pure” in each type. Most of us are some combination of a couple or all, but likely there is still a dominant type that if given freedom and opportunity would express itself.

Thinking about these types and how they may or may not fit into today’s society, begs the question, are there problems with this adaptation of vocational mindset to our modern industrial society?

Like many things, Yes and No. There is a good and a not so good side to the issue.

On the good side adaptation has taken place. Life goes on. People survive.

On the not-so-good side, though, we miss a lot. First and perhaps foremost we have missed the direct connection to the land, the ground, the elements that the Hunter/Gatherer and Farmer/Rancher provided. We are way more dependent on the few who are connected and have lost the ability to truly survive in desperate times, both in terms of food supply and in terms of basic emotional survival skill. We have lost much of the independent spirit and “can do” attitude that has made us great as a people. We have lost or tend to lose or bury that seeking, searching spirit always on the look out for the better, the higher, the beyond.

Besides that, and perhaps more saddening, is the fact that many of us are led to believe that we should become craftsmen and shopkeepers instead of being allowed and encouraged to become who we truly are inside. The home business craze (internet marketing, network marketing, ebay, etc.) has fed and survives on feeding us the line that any of us can become a wealthy “shopkeeper” if we only follow the guru or go through the correct process. I suggest that this is not true at the deepest level of our being. If, like me, you are a true hunter/gatherer, caring not a whit about operating a shop, the marketing endeavor or shopkeeping in any form is like tying the wild stallion to a tree while playing the movie of freedom in front of him. Soon either the stallion rips his head off trying to get free or pulls the tree down and drags it off. Either way it is a disastrous outcome.

If you are truly a marketer/shopkeeper, building your business online or off, by all means look for and attract the true shopkeeper types. If you need a web page built and aren’t a craftsman, by all means don’t do it yourself; find someone who will barter or take cash from you to do it for you. If you find a hunter/gatherer or farmer/rancher trying to make it in marketing help him to get out! Offer to provide a service or product in exchange for some of his meat or butter or wisdom or philosophy but encourage him to go be himself and don’t kill him and your business by trying to make him something he is not.

With this insight into basic vocational/business types your business will grow more quickly and easily and you will be a lifesaver to those who need to be redirected to their true selves.

Blessings,

Dr Jon

Four basic Vocational Types or mindsets in business.

We humans are categorized in lots of ways.We have Blood Types (A, B, AB, O),
Metabolic Types (sympathetic and parasympathetic, and variations thereof) and
Personality Types (sanguine, melancholic, phlegmatic, choleric by one method and 16 by a Jungian classification) and
Temperament Types (Idealist, Guradian, Rational, Artisan)
just to point out a few ways of categorizing our differences and similarities.

I would suggest that we also have Vocational Types as well. Based on the archetypical, agragian society that our planet has known for centuries, these are the labels suggested:

Hunter/Gatherer
Farmer/Rancher
Craftsman/Serviceman
Shopkeeper/Banker

This is how I would describe each.

The Hunter/Gatherer is like a bird, living off the abundance of the land. He lives off nuts and berries, food that he picks growing wild and game that he shoots as needed. He does not worry about putting away stockpiles of food or goods for tough times because he can move to where the food is. He doesn’t put down a lot of roots by building homes but is satisfied with the transient shelters of wigwam or lean-to type structures. He can build a log home if needed. He is the scout, the trailblazer, the pioneer, the messenger, making the larger community aware of what lay beyond the known. He is not particularly concerned about business or economics though awareness can direct some of his activities.

The Farmer/Rancher also lives off the abundance of the land, but does so in a stationary way. He opens the soil and plants, then waters and nurtures the plant until it grows to fruition, rewarding him with abundance, or nurtures his animals providing proper nutrition and space for them to multiply. Either way, he trades his care and energy for the ground for wealth and abundance. He builds a home and barns to provide for his family and animals. He depends on himself and the land for what he needs though may trade some of his abundance for extras or luxuries, but is basically independent. He does not spend a lot of time with business affairs but needs to be aware of general economics.

The Craftsman does not live off the land but depends on his own skill with his hands and on his creativity. He produces and provides prducts and services that others either need or want or think they need. He can either put down roots and build a home or can ply his skill while migrating. He does not eat what he creates but depends on trading his products or services for food either directly or by some means of exchange such as money. Consequently he is not directly connected to the land and depends on others for his livelihood. Likewose he must be aware of business practices and trends and depends on his knowledge of economics to do well.

The Shopkeeper/Banker does not live off the land either, nor does he have any personal productive or creative skill. Rather, he depends on the work of the other types, placing himself in the position of a middleman, gathering their products and services in turn for needed items and providing the other types with the items they cannot produce for themselves in return for a profit. He generally would put down deep roots, remaining stable and stationary for a long time. He would build homes and a store. He often puts his roots into the community in other ways as well, offering leadership in various ways. He is not connected directly to the land, but depends on those who are for his livelihood. He is totally dependent of the knowledge of economics and would like even to control the trends and movement of money and goods.

Now, of course these descriptions are the “purist” form of each type. Any individual could easily be a mix of one or more of these types. For example, some ranchers could also be a shopkeeper as well if he established a store on his farm. Craftsmen are frequently shopkeepers as well.

Next time let’s look at what significance these vocational types/mindsets may play in today’s world.

Blessings,
